Human Rights Day – December 10th – was created by the United Nations in 1950. Prior to this, they created the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 which states that, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
Although this comes from a socialist and entitled view, we can safely say that not everybody is living by and with human rights. However, we use December 10th as a day to see how far we’ve come and what we can do to eradicate barriers and work towards allowing everyone a peaceful life.
Human Rights Day is not one that was made necessarily to celebrate, but more a day of reflection on what goes on around the world. Think about what you can do to make it better, and make basic life necessities more accessible for all humans.
Part of human rights that you will experience is the right to be gay. Human Rights Day of 2008 created a major protest that highlighted this. With homophobes everywhere calling gay people “sick” there was a movement to call in gay to work on December 10th, 2008.It wasn’t until years later (2015) that gay marriage was finally legalized around the country.
Although equality is not something accepted by everyone, the facts are that change for the better doesn’t occur naturally, and living in ignorance and not doing anything will never make anything better. This year we are watching archaic views about people come into play, and with social media it’s great to spread word and have your opinion shared but it’s also important to take action.
On Human Rights day take the time to read news – the good and the bad – and maybe commit yourself to one cause and do something, even if it’s just a small thing, in order to make a change. it.The world only gets better with us taking control of what we want.
