I grew up in the 80’s and all of the toys on the market were definitely gender specific back then. I remember getting the typical boys toys, cars, action figures and they were all distinct blue, green, red or black colors (you know, boy colors). Action heros attached with lassos, hatchets, guns, bows and arrows, shields and the list goes on (I’ll admit,, G.I. Joe is still cool). The truth is, I secretly loved playing games and dolls with my older sister and our favorite past time was definitely board games like Pretty Pretty Princess and Dream Phone.
Because I loved drawing and being creative my number one favorite toy of all time was Fashion Plates. I remember spending hours at the dining room table creating new cutting edge colored pencil fashion. Jem was always a favorite and they are making a movie now! Take that Misfits! And who can forget My Little Pony? A whole generation of Bronys say they are here to stay and perfectly fine for boys…er men.
Below is a blast from the past as we look at some of the best girl toys from the 80’s. These are Girl toys every gay boy wanted and I think I actually owned or had access to most of the toys featured here.
FASHION FACES / FASHION PLATES
Fashion Plates – the mix and match fashion drawing set. Endless hours of fashion drawing fun! This was the perfect way to develop creativity and drawing skills. I actually had more patience than my big sis when it came to these.
ROCK ‘N CURL JEM
I remember loving Rock N’ Curl Jem Dolls! I was drawn to the big hair and the amazing rock and roll costumes and the high heels.
PRETTY PRETTY PRINCESS
I always wanted to be a princess and the winner of this game was a princess for the day! The crown had to be mine! This was a dress-up game and you basically had to be the first to collect all the gems. Hoard that loot like a Dragon…er, Princess!
Board Games
Milton Bradly reached out to girls in the 80’s because having babies in the Game of Life can be so boring! Do you remember playing board games where you win a date with a hot guy like Heartthrob or Dream Phone? Dream Phone was the best thing I had ever seen at the time! Heart Throb had its interesting moments as you guessed who the other players liked. I won’t share my choice here!
MY LITTLE PONY
Did you dream of owning Paradise Estate and collection all of the My Little Pony’s just so you could brush their hair and make them gallop through the fields? Being a Brony has never been easier so keep in mind now is the time to get back into the Ponies!
EASY BAKE OVEN
Who didn’t love the idea of making your own cake and decorating it? Would you share your creations? Of course not! ( #moreforme ). The Easy Bake Oven featured below is the one I remember from Childhood but they make more modern and streamlined versions now, still built on the same technology…yes a light bulb.
Cut and Style Doll Head
As an adult these cut and style doll heads look really creepy, but back when I was younger I wanted one so bad so I could style their hair and do their make up! Practicing to be a stylist (not that I became one) was a dream of mine!
This has been a fun time down memory lane! Usually when we think of toys for gay boys a very different blog post come out as a result! Any great toys we missed from our list? Let us know on twitter and follow us @AllMaleDating
