The gay community is notoriously known for fashion in a very presumptuous sort of way. It’s the iconic gay best friend sort of deal and although a lot of gay men are interested in other things there are some who are very much interested in fashion. So why is it that Elton John a gay man who is very much interested in designer items, boycotting Dolce and Gabbana?
It all began with an interview done with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana founders of the high end fashion label Dolce and Gabbana. The two were interviewed for Panaroma Magazine, an Italian magazine, and the interview was then translated to English by The Telegraph. The translation led to them uncovering some unfavorable thoughts towards the gay community and the way in which they choose to have their children.
According to The Telegraph, the pair said, “No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.” Dolce also added, “You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that’s how it should be … I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from catalog.””The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging,” Gabbana said.
Essentially they’re disregarding any form of having children that isn’t between a man and woman while still trying to maintain that they hold high values of those who are homosexual.
Elton John was one of the first to stand up and boycott the company arguing their archaic views. This is an ironic statement from the designing duo seeing as they had previously dated each other. Perhaps there were no plans on parenthood between the two of them.
Many gay parents are now offended that their children are being referred to as synthetic. They have directly attacked those who use the means of IVF (In vitro fertilization) to have their children.
Elton John first posted his distaste towards the couple on his Instagram. He uploaded a photo of them with the caption saying “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as “synthetic”. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again.”
It ended with the hash tag #BoycottDolceGabbana which has become incredibly popularized and is now trending heavily on Twitter. Several Celebrities and other notable figures have jumped in to support Sir Elton and talk IVF, including Al Roker:
In spite of what @dolcegabbana think, my beautiful IVF children are not “synthetic children”. I agree with @eltonjohndotcom — Al Roker (@alroker) March 15, 2015
Is this a step towards new ideas and acceptance for all? Shout out to Sir Elton John for being a major man crush and a social activist!
