In culture being gay has come with a certain voice – sometimes referred to as flamboyant or sing-songy. Where does it come from? Do gays force themselves to do it? Is it a mating call?
In the documentary that came out on September 7th 2014 “Do I Sound Gay?” journalist David Thorpe investigates through science, personal stories and experience where this gay voice stems from and why.
It includes great commentaries and appearances from Margaret Cho, Tim Gunn, George Takei and Dan Savage who have all had to deal with the criticism that comes with being gay.
It has accounts of people tracing back when they started to sound “gay“, to the feeling of being told they look or sound gay and how they reacted and even accounts of bullying from sounding gay or having more feminine mannerisms.
They try to trace back if it came from listening to women more or gay role models as we grow up and even tests out speech training.
What’s important is that it stays funny, true and it’s heartwarming. It’s a great watch for all gay males who have struggled with being comfortable in their skin. It’s about staying positive and not having to worry about what others think of you just because it’s been ingrained into our culture.
It stays light hearted and friendly and makes you want to keep watching with his quick wit. David Thorpe is able to express his feelings in a light hearted manner that is still somehow motivating and pushing towards making change and acceptance.
It’s something that can be enjoyed outside of the gay community and offer insight into the struggle in an entertaining but also educational way.
This is something we try hard to express on AllMale being comfortable and confident. As long as you’re truly not hurting anyone else then you should strive and continue to beĀ proud of how far you have come and how you got there.
