Here on the AllMale blog we have explored and updated you on many gay slang terms and yet we always seem to find more, some of them are pretty self explanatory but some of them really do baffle even us. Today we’re focusing on one of those words that really stumped us. Let’s start our Gay Glossary off right with “Cottaging”!

Imagine you’re hanging out in your favorite neighborhood gay bar and all of a sudden you overhear a conversation in the background or maybe somebody comes right up to you and they ask you if you want to go “cottaging.” What are your thoughts on that?

I would personally think that somebody is inviting me to a nice weekend in the country side but apparently that’s not at all what it means. Cottaging is actually the gay term for hooking up in a bathroom. Bathroom hook-ups and gays have always been put together. This term originates from Britain.

Thought catalog defines it as, “British slang for hooking up in public restrooms” and Urban Dictionary defines it quite similarly, “Discreet acts of buggery performed in a toilet cubicle. Often anonymous.”

“Ross and Howard were cottaging in the downstairs bogs the other day. I wasn’t shocked to find them at it though; I suspected them all along.”

If you’re somebody who is into hook up culture try testing it out next time you’re out and making a smooth move but then again if you’re not in Britain you may get some extremely puzzled looks. The more I think about cottaging the more strange it gets to me because now I’m thinking about cottage cheese and that’s just putting the worst image in my head.
