It might not be right to say that there are things straight people can learn from gay relationships because we are all aiming for equality here but if we’re being real, gay relationships can often be more functional on average. It might be perceived that way because there are many times we feel we have something to prove. We tend to work harder at our relationships but is it all for appearances? Either way there are a few things that I believe straight people can learn from a good ole’ gay relationship. Borrowed from the master, Vice columnist David Blackett and sex columnist Tracey Cox.
- Don’t judge the genitals
Perhaps it is due to a smaller number of mates to choose from, the fact that your posterior is more sensitive or just plain appreciation but a lesson that should definitely be learned by straight people is the gay appreciation for genitals in general. They come in different shapes, sizes, colors and hair count but the fact is that we all get our rocks off the same way and there is no need to be picky.
- An active sex life
Whether it’s gay men or women straight people like to believe that we’re having a butt load (haha) of sex. It’s not entirely true and like every standard couple we have our lazy days and ups and downs but we don’t sit here and complain about it. Since when is it a good conversation topic talking about how much you DON’T have sex?
- Sharing clothes
That’s right, get in a relationship and double your closet… usually. Straight couples should learn to be more androgynous and share their clothes. It creates a unique style and you’re saving money because when it comes time to shop you can agree on outfits that you both like.
Just don’t wear anything meant for a special events and in the event of a clothes fight if it wasn’t bought together the person who originally owned it gets to wear it. Pout all you want about it.
- You don’t have to have children
Why are we still populating the world when we don’t especially want to? Sure the expectations are different but the fact is if you don’t want to have children or you’re not prepared just don’t. Straight people should learn to shrug off the questions like “the gays”.
Also, you can adopt! That’s right believe it or not there are thousands of beautiful babies looking for a loving home and family. Why don’t straight people understand that you’re not required to spend thousands on fertility clinics and you can actually help somebody out and make the world a better place. Plus if you adopt older children you’re missing that disgusting diaper period.
- Chores are gender neutral
Straight people are getting a little better at this but some still have it ingrained in their brain that certain household duties are to be done by certain genders. Decide of which tasks are less hellish for you and make deals with your partners or switch off. It’s also perfectly okay to be a stay at home dad.
In the end gay couples are just like straight couples. There are fights, fluttery feelings and dry spells but the fact is that gays can inevitably break down the cruelty that comes with gender roles. In the end the only thing you really need to learn whether gay or straight is to love, respect and pull your weight in the relationship.
