Vacations with your loved one are always a nice break far away from the stresses of the world. Unfortunately equality is not yet in place so sometimes a vacation can be more stressful for your everyday life. Thankfully, we found some of the top gay friendly vacation spots in the world and so for the next ten weeks we’ll let you in on our vacation secrets.

Today we’ll be giving you the low down on Montevideo, Uruguay or ur a gay. Lame joke, sorry. Montevideo is the capital city of Uruguay and although there is still controversy in South and Central America so be wary of PDA. Uruguay however, was the first city to  allow homosexuality in 1934 and to legalize same sex marriage as well.

Where to stay:

Fancy- You’ll want to stay at the beautiful Esplendor Hotel Montevideo built in the 1920s you can imagine luxurious Gatsby parties. It’s beautiful, high end, historical and located in a place called Barrio de las Artes better known as the Arts District. You’ll be right in the middle of great food, cafes and art galleries to stop by.

Lower End- Are you somebody who uses the age old argument that you never stay in the room anyway? It’s okay because the Palermo Art Hostel is just as beautiful and in interesting. It’s art splattered and friendly reflecting the fun of the city. They even provide you tours and classes for you so you won’t be lost. Of course, you can always explore on your own.

Where to eat:

This is no place for Vegetarians, Uruguay loves their meat. If you’re down for a thick steak this is definitely the place to head to. The number one restaurant that pops up is La Pulperia. Unfortunately it’s only open for dinner so you’ll have to plan accordingly.

Where to drink:

Check out La Ronda it’s super hip and happening. It’s not the newest place but the walls are covered in old albums and LP’s and they play music to go along with it. You can also take a table outside and watch the water from where you are at the bar.

What to do:

Get everything done with a tour. Montevideo is known for their interesting and fun tours that go above and beyond the boring tours you may be used to. The best and top rated tours are called “Real English Tours” they are run by a woman who moved from the UK to Montevideo and is passionate about the city.
